What is a Cartel?
The Cartel is an original working device, proposed by Lacan to those who practice psychoanalysis and to anyone wishing to study it. This lacanian invention takes into account the group effects and aims, for its structure and functionality, to limit those effects as much as possible.
Four are chosen to work
Those who constitute a cartel are chosen with a work joint project. In 1980, Lacan said to be four members of a cartel, reference number in most of the cartels today. Meetings are held at a pace that is decided among the members called “cartelizands.”
The “plus one”
One elected by the Cartelizands, the “plus one” is the person responsible for the selection, the discussion and the destination reserved for the work of each member. His(Her) role is crucial to sustain tactfully each cartelizand work, to cope with crises and to maintain the distance between knowledge and truth. The “plus one” also link with the School, while increase the exposure of the products of the Cartel.
The subject of work
The creation of the cartel is an opportunity for everyone to choose a subject or “feature” of work: reading a seminar, development of a concept or a case, connection between psychoanalysis and other fields, and so on. The “feature” of each adds a common theme that becomes the title of the cartel under which may be declared to the School.
The issue of work
The creation of the poster is an opportunity for everyone to choose a theme or “feature” of work: reading a seminar, development of a concept or a case, connection between psychoanalysis and other fields, and so on. The “feature” of each adds a common theme that becomes the title of the cartel under which may be declared to the School.
Each one’s product
The work done does not lead to a collective product of knowledge that involves the membership of the group. This is for everyone, depending on the time of their relationship to psychoanalysis, to note what might have been modified from its connection with analytic knowledge.
The exhibition of works
The cartel products can be exposed in the cartels’ days, which are the occasions for making elaborations at the working open pit. The various publications of the Freudian Field can also be the place for presentation of certain jobs.
The cartel cannot last more than one or two years. After this time, it dissolves. The necessary conclusion avoids inertia evident in the working groups that drag and do an obstacle to the advent of new knowledge for the subject.
The poster today
Practical experience accumulated since the invention of this institutional device shows its fertility in the reading of reference texts and the study of fundamental concepts and ongoing research in psychoanalysis. It is then an instrument for analysts training and a basic organ of the Freudian Cause.
