Jacques Lacan is widely recognized as a key personality in the history of psychoanalysis and one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century. In his Seminar X, Lacan examines the nature of anxiety. He argues that it is not nostalgia for the object that creates anxiety, but its imminence. In what was to be the last of his yearlong seminars held at Sainte-Anne Hospital, these lessons from 1962-1963 form the keystone to the classical phase of his teaching, introducing for the first time the notorious object a in its oral, anal, scopic and vociferated guises.
The Book of this seminar, edited by Jacques-Alain Miller in 2004, has just been published in English-language translation by Adrian Price (Polity Press, Cambridge).
